Thailand’s $3.2B Biodiesel Program

20 November 2004

ISS. The Thai Energy Ministry and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives are working on a plan to invest about 130 billion baht ($3.2 billion) in palm plantations and 30 biodiesel refineries for which oil palms will be used as the feedstock. The government plans to use the biodiesel in a B10 blend for domestic fueling to reduce the cost of its oil imports.

Under the plan, 4 million acres of land would be dedicated as palm plantations with an estimated annual production of 10 million liters of palm oil.

The Ministry of Energy will not force motorists to switch to biodiesel right away, but would use state-owned oil firms like PTT Plc and Bangchak Petroleum Plc to sell biodiesel cheaper than regular diesel, [Energy Minister] Prommin [Lertsuride] said.

We are also planning to install a similar plant in Ecuador. Please send us information about. We have avialable 500,000 hectares of fertile land to install 20 biorefineries to produce 2 billion gallons of ethanol a year.

We have been working in gathering enough extension of land to assure the production of sugarcane for our pilot plant to produce ethanol. We have traveled to Canada and USA looking for international advisory in order to count with the best technology to convert cellulosic biomass to convert it into ethanol and also the best marketer of ethanol in the North American market to assure the sucess of our project. We are planning to produce 100 million gallons/year per plant. This means to generate funds around 150 million dollars a year, including other coproducts.

One correction. The 10 million liters of oil is not an annual production, it is a daily production. Annual production would be over 10 billion liters. The article stated they would produce 1 liter per .4 acres per day (that is 2.5 liters/acre/day).

Mr. Gallardo, ethanol and biodiesel are two different kinds of fuel. Biodiesel is something you can use in regular diesel engines.
