Westport: Building up CNG Vehicles and Infrastructure in China

Westport Innovations has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with two Chinese companies to work together on establishing a business plan to develop, market, and sell CNG/LNG-fueled vehicles and infrastructure solutions in China.
One partner, Beijing Sinogas Co. Ltd., specializes in the construction of CNG/LNG stations and managing operations involving natural gas. Sinogas has registered subsidiaries in 15 cities in China and has constructed a CNG station network consisting of more than 60 CNG/LNG stations. The second, Qingdao Sino-Canada S&T Park Co. , is an initiative between the National Research Council Canada and the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology established to facilitate the technology and R&D collaboration between companies and organizations of the two countries.
China is now devoting major efforts to increase the proportion of natural gas used to deal with its environmental concerns and energy security issues, and our natural gas business has expanded in the past few years as a result.

The Chinese government expects that natural gas will provide 10% of the country’s energy needs by 2020, up from 2.5% today. That represents a 5- to 7-fold increase in consumption from 32.8 billion cubic meters in 2003 to a projected 160–210 billion cubic meters in 2020.
In 2003, China ranked seventh in the world in its use of natural gas vehicles, with 69,300 reported. Major CNG conversion and replacement efforts for vehicles already are underway, especially in the public transportation sector, and much in preparation for the Olympics in 2008.
