Rolls-Royce Funds African D1 Biodiesel Refinery
22 February 2005
D1 Oils, (earlier post) the rapidly globally expanding UK biofuel refiner, has agreed to terms with Rolls-Royce to finance a D1 20 refinery in Durban, South Africa.
The D1 20 modular biodiesel refinery (at right), is designed to produce 8 million liters per year of biodiesel (some 2.1 million gallons US) with 90% utilization.
The new Durban refinery should be built and operational by 3Q of this year.
Under the financing arrangement, Rolls-Royce will provide a $1 million loan over four years to D1 at preferential rates of interest.
D1 also recently announced the formation of a joint venture for the production of biodiesel in Saudi Arabia (earlier post) as well as other partnerships in India and Madagascar.
Rather than taking the approach of building large, centrally-located biodiesel refineries, D1 uses a more modular approach.

The D1 20 refineries are about the size of a large shipping container, and they can be used in remote sites. Accordingly, D1 has focused on acquiring rights to large swaths of land in Southeast Asia, Africa and India on which to grow jatropha plants as a feedstock.
D1 went public on the AIM (London) last year. With the recent news, its share price has begun a steep climb. (Chart at right.)
