Gujarat, India Begins First Biodiesel Bus Service

14 March 2005

Guajarat

The Business Standard reports that Gujarat is the first State in India to run commercial buses using biodiesel fuel.

Initially, four buses using a B5 (5% biodiesel) blend will service a route between Gandhinagar (the capital city of the State) and Ahmedabad (India’s worst-polluted city—earlier post) .

Trial runs had been carried out in Haryana and Maharashtra. Even the Indian Railways had run a Jan Shatabdi on bio-diesel. But this is the first time that a regular commercial service is being started with bio-diesel,” the Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, said.

Although the Gujarat State Transport Corporation will begin with the B5 blend, it will work toward B20. Gujarat Oleo Chem Ltd, which has set up a biodiesel blending and extraction plant in South Gujarat, is providing the biodiesel.

The Gujarat State Transport Corporation has about 9,000 buses, which cover 97.5 per cent of the area in the state.

At the end of 2004, the state government decided to convert its gasoline-run vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG). It set an initial target of having all 25 departments convert five vehicles each by this month, and is pushing for the passage of the Gujart Natural Gas Act.

Hi, I'm a Mechanical engineer from the Puerto Rico University-Mayaguez Campus. I'm doing a class project, I'm investigating what buses transportation companies like you, that run on biodiesel are using. What modifications you made and maintenance to the buses? Do you have any problems you are trying to solve with this system?
Thanks, keep up the good job!

Greetings,

We already have a bio diesel program in the university, but our class project is to send a proposal to the Puerto Rico government to build a mass transportation system based on bio diesel. We are researching for the most economic and efficient bio diesel production method for the proposal to be attractive to our government. The buyer will be the government if they like what they see.

Thanks,
Joseph
