Nassau County Town Adds 7 Escape Hybrids to Green Fleet

1 March 2005

AIADA. The Nassau County, NY, town of North Hempstead is acquiring 7 Ford Hybrid Escape SUVs for the town fleet.

The Escape hybrids join seven electric vehicles and eight CNG vehicles in addition to DaimlerChrysler global electric motor (GEM) golf carts that are used mostly in parks.

“We look to pursue the hybrid vehicle as our primary source of vehicle in our fleet,” said Town Supervisor John Kaiman, who hopes to have 50% of the fleet composed of fuel-efficient cars within the next two years.

Kaiman said the town will provide financial incentives to “for hire” vehicles, such as taxis, trucks and buses, to use hybrid automobiles.
