When ZAP first announced they were going to sell the SMART car in the US and were taking orders I sent the company the required $1000 deposit to get on the waiting list. Then I waited for confirmation of my order. Now 6 months later I am still waiting for my confirmation. I have tried numerous times to contact the sales staff at ZAP with emails, phone calls and even a letter to the CEO to get confirmation. I have had NO RESPONSE from the company!!! Is this a gigantic scam??? Do they ever intent to deliver cars to those of us that have sent them deposits??? Why can't I get confirmation of my order???

I'm not convinced. Seems like a big premium to pay to get something different and not better than the hybreds that currently exist. Not a scam, but smells like profiteering. Too bad.

The problem with hybrid cars are the expensive battery. Let's say you drive the sucker for years, then are ready to sell it to buy a new one or something else. You might have to buy a new $3.5K battery to replace the one in it before you sell. It's not like you can buy a new battery at Wal-Mart or sell it with a depleted crappy battery.

I am always interested in new ideas in fuel efficiency. The old german DKW had a 2 or 3 cylinder car that would get some 50-60 mpg on the freeway. It doesn't look like we have progressed much passed that, even with the smart car. Even Honda can't give us much efficiency past 6o mpg. Isn't there a small gas engine that can give 70 plus miles a gallon?... Maybe, by cutting out use of cylinders at highway speeds like cadillac did on one of their lines.
