D1 Partners with Indian Biotech for Jatropha Plants

Jatropha Seedlings in Labland Nursery

An Indian biotech firm is producing some 100 million tissue culture-derived Jatropha curcas plants to be used in D1 Oils’ (earlier post) global biodiesel plantations.

D1’s strategy calls for the distributed production of biodiesel using small refineries, about the size of a large shipping container, which can be used in remote sites to process jatropha oil into biodiesel.

They have selected the best yielding varieties, the best yielding lines of jatropha. Now what they want is billions and billions to be promoted everywhere. They want this in Philippines, they want it in Indonesia, in Saudi Arabia, in Malaysia, India, Africa. But where is the planting material? They have selected clones, best yielding, so that is possible only through the application of tissue culture. So for that purpose they have approached us.

—Sudheer Shetty, Managing Director of Labland Biotech  (ANI)

Labland performed the tissue culture cloning of jatropha without any direct genetic engineering—removing potential objections to deployment in countries that might have concerns with genetically modified organisms (GMO).

Currently, the jatropha plants are projected to yield about 1,000 barrels of oil per year per square mile under cultivation.

dear jatropha planters,

call me tony and my korean friend calls me jatropha king in asia. it is mainly because my jatropha nursery is the largest in all asia. i am based in davao city and at present i have in my nursery now some 1 million seedlings. we are planting in two thousand five hundred hectares property in marilog, davao city. we intend to plant jatropha in the whole of mindanao this year.
thus making mindanao the largest jatropha plantation in the whole world. we will then be freed from the clutches of oil producing countries if we can manufacture bio-diesel in the next 3 to 5 years.

As an American with serious interest in the countries mentioned above, I am pleased to see so much interest. Most of my time is in Philippines, China and Indonesia, which are excellent places for this industry.
Great luck to all!
