Nikkei. Toyota will partner with Daihatsu—owned more than 51% by Toyota and known for its compact cars—to produce a small car in India as early as 2007.

The Toyota-Daihatsu car will be most likely a 1-liter-class vehicle based on the Passo model (Boon for Daihatsu) the two companies co-developed. The Passo is the smallest and least-expensive model in Toyota’s lineup, displacing the Yaris from that position.

Introduced in 2004, the Passo uses a pair of small engines. The base engine is a 1.0-liter VVT-i three-cylinder., the other a 1.3-liter VVT-i four-cylinder.

Fuel consumption 5.0 l/100km 5.8 l/100km

Initially, Toyota and Daihatsu plan to assemble 100,000 cars a year in the country at a plant to be built near Toyota’s factory in Bangalore in southern India at a cost of slightly more than¥10 billion (US$90 million).

India is an growing auto market, with sales expected to roughly double from 1.06 million vehicles in 2004 to 2 million in 2010.

This will be Daihatsu’s first foray into the country. Toyota, however, has been building the Corolla in India with a local firm, selling 48,000 vehicles last year, the company’s record for the country.

Toyota’s share of India’s auto market currently stands at a mere 5%—the dominant player is Maruti Suzuki, a joint venture between Suzuki and India’s Maruti Udyog. Maruti Suzuki holds a 50% share of the local market, where small cars account for more than 70% of overall auto sales.

India is already the fourth-largest automaker in Asia, after Japan, China and South Korea. The two companies hope small-car production in India will boost the Toyota group’s combined market share in the country to 10%, or 200,000 vehicles a year, by 2010.

Suzuki and Hyundai plan to build a factory in India in 2007, the second for each, and Honda intends to boost its annual production capacity in the country from 30,000 vehicles to 50,000 by year-end.

Toyota should introduce a world-class small car immediately in India. Fuel e fficient. At least 15" tubeless tyres for rough Indian roads. 40 % prospective buyers have deferred car buying to await Toyota small car.
