With almost three months still left in the hurricane season, the formation of the 15th named storm of 2005—Tropical Storm Ophelia—brings the number of storms this year so far equivalent to the total for the entire season of 2004.
In early August, NOAA updated its forecast to call for a 95% to 100% chance of an above-normal 2005 Atlantic hurricane season.
Following on Katrina, the currently spinning hurricanes Maria and Nate bring the number of hurricanes formed so far this season to six.
