Port of Los Angeles Seeking More Info on Biofuels as Diesel Substitutes/Additives

The Port of Los Angeles has issued an open letter of solicitation to biofuel and biofuel facility providers to explore the possibility of using biofuels in Port-related equipment and marine vessels for emissions reductions.
The letter from Ralph Appy, the Port’s Director of Environmental Management, seeks information on products, blends, availability, benefits and costs for use in equipment that is traditionally diesel-fueled.
Targeted types of equipment include:
Cargo Handling Equipment: yard tractors, cranes, forklifts, reach stackers, gantry cranes, side handlers, slid loaders, sweepers, top handlers and rubber-tired loaders. (
Harbor Craft: Assist tugboats, towboats/push-boats/tugboats, ferries and excursion vessels, crew boats, workboats, government vessels, dredges and dredging support vessels, commercial fishing vessel and recreational vessels.
Railroad locomotives: Line haul and switching locomotives.
Auxiliary Engines on Ocean-Going vessels: These supply the electrical demands of the ship.
On-road Heavy-Duty Vehicles: On-road trucks that transport port-related cargo.
The Port is requesting statements of interest, contact information and relevant brochures within 30 days from today. Information is available on the website at www.portoflosangeles.org.
