GM’s DoD Now Called “Active Fuel Management”
5 December 2005
GM has trademarked “Active Fuel Management” (AFM) as the name for its displacement on demand technology (earlier post), beginning with the Vortec 5.3 V-8-equipped 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. The name will be applied to all 2007 model year vehicles equipped with the technology.
GM’s Active Fuel Management enables the engine to automatically and seamlessly operate on only half of the engine’s cylinders when full power is not needed, decreasing fuel consumption by up to 12% in sedans and 5% in large trucks and SUVs.
GM currently offers the technology in nine vehicle models—more than any other automaker. The technology was introduced as “displacement on demand” in the 2005 model year Vortec 5300 V-8-equipped Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL and Envoy XUV. It is available in the 2006 model year 5.3-liter V-8-equipped Buick Rainier; Chevrolet TrailBlazer, TrailBlazer EXT, Impala SS, Monte Carlo SS; GMC Envoy and Envoy XL; Pontiac Grand Prix GXP; and Saab 9-7X.
GM plans to introduce a 3.9-liter V6 AFM displacement-on-demand system in the 2007 Monte Carlo and Impala.
GM estimates that more than two million of its vehicles will utilize the technology by 2008. The name change is intended to convey an awareness of fuel economy issues.

This is just rearanging deck chairs. Raise gas prices a couple of bucks a gallon. Then let people decide if these behomoths are really necessary. Right now, in this area, Colorado, gas is down below $2 bucks a gallon. No doubt we will see a return to the guzzlers.
Improvements around the edges will not cut it.
I will believe the improvements when I see some real world data. Even so, anything less than 50% just doesn't get it.

Last time I was in Colorado gas was $1.79.9 per gallon at the more expensive stations.
I wouldn't pay that price. Wish I could buy some for that price now.

Geez-how bout smaller displacement turbocharged engines, diesels even. 5%, 12% really doesn't cut it, when 30-40% is easily possible. GM already makes such
motors...so cut the teaze!
