Toyota Teaser: Camry Hybrid to Debut 9 Jan 2006
8 December 2005
Toyota has announced that it will stage the world premier of the much-anticipated Camry Hybrid and the all-new 2007 Camry on 9 January 2006 at a press conference at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The application of the Hybrid Synergy Drive in the Camry Hybrid will deliver the highest level of Camry performance ever achieved in both fuel efficiency and low emissions and also achieve impressive power, according to the statement.
The Camry hybrid will mark Toyota’s first production of a hybrid sedan that also has a non-hybrid counterpart.
The Toyota Camry has been the best-selling car in America for seven of the past eight years. The completely restyled and re-engineered Camry will feature, according to Toyota, significantly improved performance and new levels of comfort and refinement.

I agree with Mark. The Camry needs to get much better mileage than the '05 EPA of 20/28 for the V6. Prius set the high water mark at 55 mpg combined. So something like, both numbers in the 40's would make it a sure winner.
As a Camry and Prius owner, my wife and I find the Prius power to be no problem at all, and the Camry power to be more than we need (I only got the V6 because I thought noone would ever buy a used Camry with a V4).
For me, the only thing better would be an optional plug-in, IMHO.

Marc,
Others will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that Honda dropped the manual option because with it is was possible to drive in such a way that it got batteries to be dangerously low on charge and that affected their lifespan.

Justin, can you provide a URL for that press release?
And thanks for the added info. That clears up a lot. Cheers...

I keep waiting for a hybrid that caters to the true driving enthusiast. This means probably a bit more than average power, but it's not really all about power. It's also about handling and driving involvement. In the power department this Camry hybrid sounds about ideal, but I want a traditional manual gearbox with three pedals, and I don't want Camry's traditionally ponderous, flaccid handling. I know Toyota's HSD doesn't lend itself to manual transmissions, but it looked like Honda was going to carry the torch with it's IMA system. Instead, they dropped the manual option from the latest Civic hybrid and never even offered it on the Accord. :-(
Dissapointing to this green-conscienced auto enthusiast.
