VW Unveils GX3: 46mpg Three-Wheeler

4 January 2006

Gx3
The GX3

Volkswagen today introduced its concept GX3 at the Los Angeles Auto Show, a three-wheeled, two-seater vehicle it calls a crossover between a motorcycle and sports car. With a 1.6-liter engine, the GX3 offers acceleration from 0–100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and an estimated fuel consumption in the city of 46 mpg (5.2 l/100km).

The four-cylinder gasoline engine delivers 92 kW (125 hp) and 152 Nm of torque. The vehicle, with an estimated price of less than $17,000, itself weighs a mere 1,257 lbs (570 kg).

The 215/45 R17x8J front wheels are controlled by a double lateral steering axle. While the front axle resembles the layout of an automobile, the rear axle shows more parallels to a motorcycle. The right side of the vehicle also makes use of a monoswing arm.

The engine’s power is delivered via 6-speed transmission and chain drive to the rear wheel, which has a tire size of 315/30 R18x12J—a new super bike dimension.

The basic structure of this driving machine is formed by a high-density, warp-resistant, steel construction space frame. The paneling of the interior and exterior parts of the space frame is made of high density fiberglass. An 80-liter trunk trunk is located behind the seats.

Volkswagen says that it will decide whether or not to produce the GX3 based on reaction from consumers.

This would be a great way to get around. At under 17k I'd be on the list before release day.

I saw it at the L.A Auto show and fell in love with it. I will buy one but it has to look like the concept vehicle i saw and fell in love with. Alot of times the vehicle that comes out of the factory looks nothing like the concept which is too bad. VW dont disapoint like you did with the Micro Bus.

i think biodiesel capable engine would be a very nice option- i think it'll be more reliable here in nevada or cali or az coz we dont really get much rain or snow so a roof doesnt really matter but insect and bugs and especially road debris is a serious matter even rocks from asphalt laying would be an issue so a windshield would be a good thing, but as a city car, riding at las vegas blvd, with exhaust notes similar to that of a n AMV8, man oh man that would be sooo cool, not sure if girls would like it coz their hair would absolutely be destroyed

Yes! This VW is a great idea, but will they sell one? Go and see the "Peugeot 20 Cup" for a diffrent take on the same idea!
Just typing THREE WHEELED cars and see what's already on sale! Ask could i buy one of these cars?

I am the luckiest of all I sell VW and I sell T-rex another three wheeler with outstanding performance and great fun.
If VW produce this unit based on all the feedback that I get from the T-rex owners it is going to be a pure winner. VW should ask me for advice.....
GO VW <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

I think the gx3 is awesome. I do alot of driving and 46mpg sounds pretty good. I'm a student and $17000 is right in my price range. The design is pretty cool too; its a cross between a roadster and a motorcycle

Vw needs to work on the front end design a little more. I think the lights are not positioned to be the most attractive.

The chain is fine.
It can be enclosed and well lubricated, with a self adjusting tensioner.

It does need a top because I live in Oregon.

The engine could be smaller.
With a 1300 cc engine, it would probably get over 50 mpg.
More fiberglass and graphite composits would lighten it up even more.

I wont one with a roof!
Thanks!

Awesome concept. I Want One.I think the front of the Gx3 should have some changes ,such as the head lights
Need to be flush in the body.

Great concept. The market is there. Put it into production.

I have cash!

Superb Concept Car, For a three wheeler, I am more interested in its application in the developing world. For that market the VW GX-3 price would be still an issue. I am working on a prototype 3 wheeler for the third world, I am currently looking for financial backers.

With my snowmoble and ATV, this would be a great addition. WE really need the windshield and enclosure and maybe a little heat. Anyway, what a great touring vehicle for the retired couple.

Yes the VX GX-3 for 17k is an awesome deal (A T-Rex for 50G ouch!). I'd buy a GX-3 (Go-Cart) for my RV Fun Mover toy hauler. Two improvements, 1) A must have - removable top / windshield with storage for wet to dry conditions. 2) The front driving lights layout needs be widened (adding heads up safety since this so low to the road) include directionals with the driving lights and add running lights on top of the front wheels fenders, this would in turn out lines the width of the front end for oncoming vehicles allowing for heads up judgment.

I've been following the GX 3 since they dropped the bomb at the LA auto show and I am definitely interested. In some of the photos you see what looks like a clear plastic or plexiglass sheet that sits on top of the headlights. In the desktop wallpaper I downloaded, it looks like this piece of plexi is held down by some form of fasteners -can't tell to well. But if there are fasteners on either side, I would think it would be nothing to fashion an aftermarket windshield using those fasteners.

The only problem I may see with the headlight position being widened would be placement height unless the moved them opposite of the side mirrors. my only real question: where do I attach my license plates?

Posted by: colson | February 24, 2006 at 10:37 PM

Where do I have to go to put a deposit down?

There is nothing on 4 or 3 wheels like that at that price street legal. I have been waiting for something like that without having to use a home equity loan.

After checking out : Noble, Ariel Atom, Lotus elise, T-rex, Rotax Rm1 kart, I find that the GX3 is exactly a mixture of all of the sensations you can experience with the previous toys at an unique price, mileage and street legal without hassle in the DMV.

I can go to work = Commuter
I can go to the track = Track toy ( 2g lateral g-forces)
I can go to the mountains = Weekend trips
46 mpg???
$17.000???

Please Volkswagen produce it ASAP!

Posted by: Francisco Durban | February 26, 2006 at 07:15 PM

Ah....I forgot to mention something very important. A removable hard top is welcome ( even I live in Las Vegas, sometimes I like to go up to the mountains where It gets cold)

And please listen to this. It has to accomodate a 6'4 or 6'5 and 220 pound driver. We are in the USA guys. Some of us are tall people.

A heater, A/C and decent sound system is also welcome (like the one in Lotus Elise is enough)

Posted by: Francisco Durban | February 26, 2006 at 07:59 PM

For a radio, they should include an ipod. A built in radio would suck, because it would have to be waterproof.

I would buy one this minute were it available. Gas or diesel, preder diesel. This GX 3 would be perfect for every need. Just the wife andI now Please don't drop this idea. To many people have wanted such a vehicle for to long...

PS, Just tell me when and where...

What an awsome vehicle. I would Buy two right now. When will it be available. We need more vehicles with this type of fuel milage. Great commute vehicle!

Posted by: Paul Meza | March 10, 2006 at 11:05 PM

I'd fork over the cash TODAY for one of these.

List of options needed:
-Removeable, Flip up hard top for driving in the wet.
-Heater for winter driving.
-Detachable Windscreen (reduce bugs, rocks, and wind buffetting)
-Performance MODS (i.e. turbo, supercharger, NOS)

I drive a Supercharged Harley truck on a daily basis. The GX3 would reduce my commuting expenses and still give me my daily thrill of driving 60 miles per day.

Posted by: Del | March 14, 2006 at 04:54 AM

The idea of the GX3 concept really reminds me of the early 80"s Tri Hawk ,but more futuristic .The downsides are ,no roll up windows or windshield ,no pop up or popoff roof ,no heat ... no air and the stereo could have volumn control and channel control from the back side of the steering wheel .That works well in a convertible when you have alot of wind and noise variables .The drivers eyes aren't distracted from the road when changing tunes . Add a few extra goodies VW and your sure to have a top seller .
