Cummins Westport Receives $350,000 to Support Demo of Next-Generation Natural Gas Engine

Cummins Westport will receive US$350,000 in funding from Utilization Technology Development (UTD) to support the customer demonstration of the next-generation ISL G 8.9-liter natural gas engine.
The ISL G will meet the coming EPA and CARB 2010 emissions standards of 0.2 g/bhp-hr oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and 0.01 g/bhp-hr particulate matter (PM) at its launch in 2007, using cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and a passive three-way catalyst that simultaneously converts NOx, carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC). High EGR rates in the combustion process replace large amounts of excess air as used in Lean Burn Spark Ignited natural gas engines (LBSI). The use of EGR not only lowers combustion temperatures and flame speeds as does LBSI technology, but it also allows the creation of oxygen-free exhaust, enabling the use of the three-way catalyst.
Greenhouse gas emissions are expected to be 17% lower than the cleanest diesel engine available. The advanced engine is also expected to have improved thermal efficiency and power density relative to current natural gas engines.
The ISL G is commencing pre-commercial field trials in southern California and will be commercially available in 2007.
In May 2004, Cummins Westport introduced the L Gas Plus. which is the platform for the ISL G and other next-generation engines. The current L Gas Plus is rated at 320 hp (239 kW) and 1,356 Nm torque and is capable of meeting 2007 EPA standards for NOx and PM.
UTD was established in 2004 as an Illinois not-for-profit company to facilitate voluntarily funded, collaborative research related to end-use applications. Participating natural gas distribution companies direct the strategy and project funding. The technology portfolio includes increased-efficiency gas equipment and appliances, industrial process and combustion systems, distributed energy, and combined heat-and-power (CHP) systems.
