Indian State to Plant 160 Million Jatropha Plants in Quest for Biofuel Self-Sufficiency
4 April 2006
![]() |
Kerala. The Indian state of Chhattisgarh will plant 160 million jatropha saplings in all its 16 districts this year with the aim of becoming a biofuel self-reliant state by 2015. (Earlier post.)
Some 80 million of the jatropha plants are to be planted by the forest department in wasteland areas, according to the report by the Indo-Asian News Service. Jatropha can thrive under a variety of geo-climatic conditions, has a low gestation period and a high seed-yield.
“In a bid to inspire small farmers for mass cultivation of jatropha, the government has decided to provide 500 jatropha saplings free of cost to farmers interested to cultivate it and 50 paise per sapling will be charged for above 500 saplings,” the [unnamed] official said.
The state of Chhattisgarh plans to earn Rs.40 billion (US$895 million) annually by selling seeds after 2010. It has advised the central government to introduce a national biofuel policy and provide a massive grant to states working on a long-term policy to emerge as biofuel self-reliant.

DOES ANYONE HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT GROWING JATROPHA IN KASARAGOD OR KANNUR, NORTHERN DISTRICTS OF KERALA?
Posted by: Fiona | December 13, 2006 at 04:28 AM
We have a five year old jatropha plantation in Tanzania, I am afraid all the so called facts on the web are very missleading, jatropha does not grow without water one secondly the yeilds talked about are unreal, you only have to know what a 5 year old tree grown under irrigation looks like to realise that these so called yeilds are fantacy, thirdly there are no established plantations in the world that we know of other than ours, BP planted there first nursery in India in 2006 we have researched Jatropha for 5 years and have had hundreds of people visiting us all with unfounded information.

I am an Indian Forester presently working with (International Institute for Applied systems analysis)IIASA,Austria. I know Jatropha and worked on a project on it in 1998-2001. Since then I know about Jatropha fairly well. Only in recent years it has become topic of everybody's interest. Any way, the data on yield reported by most sources are incorrect and highly misleading. It is no doubt a good idea to embark on bio-diesel but it requires some more experience on it by our farmers n businessmen.
If someone is interested to know more on it, please feel free to contact me: karoshi1968@rediffmail.com or +43 650 7221422 (Cell)

Respected Sir,
Being an automotive engineer and having a wide experience working for automotive industry (Germany) in the fields like combustion development and emission, calibration and vehicle integration.
I'm interested in cultivating Jatropha for the production of an alternative fuel (Biodiesel) as biodiesel is produced from renewable raw materials, an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional diesel fuel. I would also like to promote it by making local farmers aware of its pros. This can provide a benefit for future generations and makes us independent of the limited mineral oil reserves and provides a benefit for future generations.
I'm interested in Jatropha cultivation in Rajasthan on large scale in a few districts like CHURU, JODHPUR, PALI, SIKAR and UDAIPUR. Can Jatropha be planted in these districts of Rajasthan? Please let me know the area/environment condition where it yields maximum.
I have seen your home page on the Internet and am most impressed by your services and would be interested in receiving some information on cultivation of Jatropha. I need your assistance and expertise in Biodiesel production right from site selection (low cost land available in plenty) for the Jatropha plantation to the end product.
I would be grateful if you could supply me with any relevant information you may have on Jatropha plantation.
Many thanks in advance for your attention to this enquiry.
Thanking you,
Yours sincerely
Rakesh
