Toyota Expects US Hybrid Sales to Grow 30% in 2007
15 November 2006
Nikkei. Toyota Motor expects US sales of hybrid vehicles in 2007 to grow 30% over its 2006 estimate to about 300,000 units.
Toyota sees its hybrid sales growing now that local output of the gasoline-electric version of the Camry sedan has been launched, strengthening its supply capabilities.
Toyota Motor Sales USA also is targeting a doubling of its market share target for the redesigned Tundra full-size pickup to 10%.
To this end, the automaker plans to enlarge the truck and use a more powerful engine to appeal to a wider base of drivers. Production of the new Tundra will begin at a new plant in the state of Texas.
Toyota Motor Sales USA Chairman Yukitoshi Funo noted that the importance of diesel engines is growing, so the firm is considering a full-scale entry into the market, mostly with trucks. It expects the capital and business tie-up recently formed with Isuzu Motors Ltd. [earlier post] to “help move up” this entry, according to Funo.

All this talk about boaters and horse owners is irrelevant. The fact is that the vast majority of truck owners and SUV owners tool around in their vehicles on commutes with one person at the wheel. This is obvious from casually observing the vehicles on the major highways in and around Denver, Colorado.
America need a massive weight reduction plan, both for its people and it vehicles. I will grant you that a lot of those people to be "stuffed" into cars "need" their SUV in order to deemphasize their obvious personal bloat.
As far as boating goes, that is another area that could stand increases in fuel efficiency. Gas guzzling boaters are no better than gas guzzling vehicle drivers.
We need a hefty carbon tax and/or a carbon rationing system with cap and trade. If after we implement that, people choose to use their limited ration on auto or boat gas guzzlers, then so be it. If we don't want to address the oil dependency problem or global warming, then we can continue to argue about whether we should bend over backwards to accomodate those who don't give a damn about the planet.

New boat sales were in a sharp decline nearly matching the decline in SUV sales when gas prices were at their highest. I wonder if those sales have rebounded in a similar fashion to SUV sales.
I'm probably bigger than most people I have seen in SUVs and I fit just fine in a compact (2-door) vehicle.
Recreational [power] boats use more fuel than cars...and have less restrictive emissions requirements. They are a double whammy on the environment.

Last night the price of the premium gasoline in México increased to MX$ 8.26 per litre, which is equivalent to
USD$ 2.88 per US gallon.
This is why many people here prefer RAV-4s and CR-Vs instead of Grand Cherokees and Explorers.
However, the diesel is cheaper here; about USD$ 1.98 per
US gallon.

All thse combined would give GM's (and DaimlerChrysler) 2 mode hybrid a run for it's money: IMA (BAS), supercharged/turbo+engine downsizing, advanced cylinder deactiviation (6,8,10 cylinder engines), AMT, DI, advanced VVT perhaps camless w/solenoid valves. It would be comparable in cost, and likewise, pay for itself over time.

"Ever notice how the names of the trucks are the same places that the trucks are destroying? Tundra, Yukon... there are others but I can't remember."

My favorite is Denali -- which, by the way, is an anagram of "Denial".

Please. Now you're just being absurd.
Right, because saying "trying to cram people into smaller vehicles they don't want to buy" is not absurd at all.
