Western China to Rebuild 37 Airports Between 2006-10
12 March 2007
People’s Daily. Western China will relocate, rebuild or extend 37 airports between 2006 and 2010 at a cost of 52 billion yuan (US$6.5 billion).
At present, the western region has a total of 54 civil-use airports, or 38% of the total number of airports in China. Airport density in northwest area is merely one fifth of that in eastern China. With a rapid economic growth, the vast western region has a growing demand for increased civil aviation. Especially in those outlying areas, airport construction outweighs that of rail routes.
Xinjiang, which has become China’s top oil and petrochemical region, will have 20 airports at the end of the 11th Five-year Plan period.
