ExxonMobil Chemical Li-Ion Battery Separators for HEVs Now on Commercial Line

8 May 2007

ExxonMobil Chemical’s affiliate, Tonen Chemical Corporation, is now producing on a commercial line its microporous films for separators for Lithium-ion batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles (HEV/EV). (Earlier post.)

The separators are produced using a proprietary wet, bi-orientation manufacturing process. The new films are co-extruded using specially tailored, high-heat resistant polymers for improved separator properties.

The advanced performance separators exhibit enhanced permeability, higher meltdown temperature and melt integrity without compromising the shutdown temperature and mechanical strength. The higher meltdown temperature significantly increases the film’s thermal safety margin.

These separators offer the potential to make HEV batteries lighter, smaller and more durable, contributing to system cost reduction and improvements in design flexibility.

The new separators are the result of close collaboration between Tonen Chemical, with more than 20 years’ experience in separator research and process technology, and ExxonMobil Chemical, a global leader in polyolefin technology.

Tonen Chemical has recently invested in additional, fully scaleable commercial production lines to satisfy global automotive industry demands. The new generation films will be on display at the Advanced Automotive Battery Conference (AABC) in Long Beach, CA, 14-18 May. Samples are available immediately for advanced HEV/EV lithium-ion battery applications.

"co-extruded?" Is this advanced geek speak?

Where is the site in which HEV Separator made? I think the place must be Kumi, Korea? But it's really well-known theory to make high melting temperature, shut down temperature of LIBS(Lithium ion Battery Separator). So this article is not so chic. All the manufacturers Asahi, SK(Korea) including Tonen can make all the HEV Separator....
The most imporatant factor is safety of diluents which used to make separator...
