Agra Police Begin Seizing Non-CNG Auto Rickshaws

8 July 2007

IANS. Police in Agra, India, home of the Taj Mahal, have begun to seize auto rickshaws and taxis running on diesel or gasoline after an order made it mandatory to run on compressed natural gas (CNG).

The ban went into enforcement last Wednesday, implementing an order that had initially been issued in September 2006.

Over the weekend, police fined dozens of auto rickshaw drivers and impounded several vehicles. Auto drivers, however, are unhappy as they feel the ban was hastily imposed without making provisions for enough CNG outlets.
