no surprise that NA has such a low percentage in this 2 million – the car makes minimal sense in the US, where you can get a Corolla – which is twice as big inside – with nearly equivalent mileage.

"..[Corolla]...Twice as big inside...[versus Fit]"
Ok, from Edmunds, here are the specs:
Corolla vs. Fit
Front Head Room: 39.3 in. Fit: 40.6 in.
Front Hip Room: 51.9 in. Fit: 51.2 in.
Front Shoulder Room: 53.1 in. Fit: 52.8 in.
Rear Head Room: 37.1 in. Fit: 38.6 in.
Rear Shoulder Room: 53.5 in. Fit: 50.6 in.
Rear Hip Room: 46.2 in. Fit: 51 in.
Front Leg Room: 41.3 in. Fit: 41.9 in.
Rear Leg Room: 35.4 in. Fit: 33.7 in.
Luggage Capacity: 13.6 cu. ft. Fit: 21.3 cu. ft.
The Fit actually has more usable space in the back than a Corolla.
The issue is perception, not real specifics. American market simply do not like small cars, and that will not change any time soon.

BTW, I'd like to add that when I say "usable space", I meant that it is a flexible area where it accommodate people and cargo, much like the excuses people used to use for SUVs instead of station wagons.
The Fit is an innovative car that tries to address much of the "needs" that people "want" in a well-rounded car; a people mover, a cargo hauler for the few occasions, low-cost, and have good fuel economy. Corolla is a sedan that caters to a market that cared more about driving comfort and have the branding for long-term reliability.
If someone doesn't like the styling of a Fit and prefer a Corolla, by all means, BUY a Corolla! I like the Fit because it is versatile and it is very flexible for the space it provides. With vehicles like xB, Fit, Matrix, Mazda3 5-door, etc. these vehicles provides a lot of INTERIOR space in a fuel-efficient platform. It's a great alternatives to SUVs and minivans for a good segment of the population.

I wouldn't fit in the back of a Fit with another adult. Not enough leg room or shoulder room.
Better gas mileage in a Corolla on the highway 34mpg (fit) versus 37mpg (corolla) [manual transmission, I don't purchase cars with automatic transmissions].
I do like the greater usable space of the Fit, more sporty driving feel, and lower price point. Driving the Corolla is akin to being in a coma...you don't feel a damn thing and can't wake up.
Now if we could get a fit with a lower profile (less frontal surface area and better Cd) and lower height I would completely accept equivalent headroom (front and rear) to the Corolla. Headroom is only an issue [for me] when a car has a sun roof and I purchase my vehicles without a sunroof.

The FIT and JAZZ are NOT the same car, at least not mileage-wise. While the FIT gets about 30/40 mph, it's European counterpart, the JAZZ gets a whopping 50/60 mph due to a different engine and transmission. We saw them while visiting Europe and don't understand why we can't purchase a lower mileage JAZZ in the US. Big Oil companies, I think.
Any ideas on how to get around that???

Surely the oil industries are not so blind/short sighted that they cannot see the distruction their products have reaped, are and will continue to reap upon society and ironically themselves.Henry Ford designed the Model T to run on Ethenol...."the fuel for ever". Is it that the oil industries find it hard to accept that they have a responsibilty to look to the future to help address the problems.Their shareholders will certainly wish to see a future for their offspring and investment.....so lets not poison our only home..EARTH

further....We have a Honda Jazz 2006. Without doubt the most satisfying vehicle i have driven in my 50years of motoring.I would love to see a hybrid/biofuel engine jazz....
doing 70-80mpg.
The oil industies have dictated far too long....I am
sure Henry Ford would love to be looking down on a clean Earth......
