Report: BMW Considering Low-Emissions Supermini
3 August 2007
The Financial Times reports that BMW is considering developing a new supermini smaller than its current MINI as part of a review of its market position and car portfolio.
According to people with knowledge of the project, BMW has ordered initial work on prototypes of a low-emission car smaller than any of the company’s models. “BMW is considering a small car under the Mini,” said one. “It’s very serious.”
People familiar with the project said BMW would be unlikely to use its brand for the new car, which might be built on the same platform as the next-generation MINI. German media have carried unconfirmed reports recently that BMW might team up with Mercedes on a small car.

Yep. One spec has it running a 12kW Li pack to four wheel motors and a supercap for regenerative E capture. Interesting.

On a more serious note, this is good news. The cooler and more desirable small cars are, the quicker people will shift from unnecessarily large vehicles (in the context of their personal needs) to something more reasonable.
