Toyota Publishes Restructured Sustainability Report
10 August 2007
Toyota has released “Sustainability Report 2007: A New Future for People, Society and the Planet”, which marks the second year that the company has produced a sustainability report, addressing its own environmental, economic, and social issues, as opposed to a more specialized environmental report.
While the company’s first sustainability report (as well as preceding environmental reports) presented Toyota’s initiatives in the order with which they impacted the vehicle development and production process, “Sustainability Report 2007” is thematically structured along five themes; energy, global warming, recycling of resources, “substances of concern”, and atmospheric quality.
The change brings Toyota’s annual report in line with the goals of the Fourth Toyota Environmental Action Plan, which was adopted in May 2005. Toyota’s companies and suppliers are encouraged to develop and adopt a new environmental management action pan every five years.
Although Toyota’s report is primarily concerned with activities in Japan, Europe, and North America, Sustainability Report 2007 also covers operations in Brazil. The company plans to increase its “global information disclosure”, reporting on activities in additional countries. 86% of Toyota’s operations now fall under the umbrella of its sustainability report.
“Sustainability Report 2007: A New Future for People, Society and the Planet” is currently available in Japanese only; an English version is scheduled to be released by the end of August.

This is excellent leadership. As Toyota becomes the world's largest business it is incumbent upon it to act as its best citizen. Let's hope that their lead will be rapidly adopted by other business enterprises and corporations. Congratulations Toyota!
