New High-Tensile Steel with More Elongation Could Reduce Vehicle Weight

15 September 2007

JFE Steel Corporation has developed a prototype 1,180-MPa high tensile strength steel with 15% or more elongation property than the 780 MPa product. Once commercialized, this can contribute to reductions of vehicle weight of around 10%, according to the company.

Generally, the elongation property of steel decreases as the tensile strength increases. JFE disperses nano particles in the steel (the NANO process: New Application of Nano Obstacles for dislocation movement) to support elongation.

The new “1,180-MPA NANO high ten” steel will be used for vehicle frame components as well as to reinforce other parts.
