Toyota Starts Tree-Planting Project in Philippines
13 September 2007
Toyota has started working on tree-planting activities in the town of Peñablanca, Cagayan Province (about 500km north of Manila), located in the north of the Filipino island of Luzon.
The tree-planting activities are being conducted in the form of a joint project with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the Philippines, the Peñablanca Municipal Government and Conservation International (CI), an environmental NGO, with 1,772ha of land to be afforested over a three-year period starting September 2007.
By providing the reforestation expertise and tree-planting techniques developed through its activities in China, Toyota seeks to create a system in the Philippines, where deforestation is a serious problem, that combines both a means of supporting the livelihood of local communities and reforestation. Specifically, it will establish a forest for harvesting fuel wood and urge local residents to cultivate cash crops, such as mango and cocoa, to combat logging for fuel wood and slash-and-burn agricultural methods—the causes of deforestation.
Toyota is contributing ¥170 million (US$1.5 million). Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation, a local corporation, will provide a Toyota Hilux pickup truck free of charge for the tree-planting activities.

This is good. I challenge all car companies to plant trees for cheap or free. Even if it's just to look good. There's cheap spots to do it in the Philippines. Get going.

Gentlemen:
In 1987, I wrote a letter and suggested to the Philippine Congress to pass a bill requiring Hign School male students to plant at least l5 fruit bearing trees along the highways as a prerequisite to graduation. I suggested further that the Departments of Education, Local Governments, and Agriculture will assist in this project to ensure its success.
The Department of Local Governments shall take care of maintaining the planted trees. My group of deep well drillers are willing to install the wells within a period of 2 - 3 days for one well. Electric grid is accessible along the highways which makes it possible to draw water from the wells by the use of motor pumps for the plants and for humans as well. Should you need more information, please send me an email.
Thanks,
Joe

Presumably Toyota has figured out that this is the cheapest place in the world to plant trees then....
Makes em look good for doing almost nothing.
