Chrysler to Offer Alt-Fuel Version of Every Model
1 October 2007
Detroit News. James Press, the Chrysler vice chairman recruited last month from Toyota Motor Corp., told The Detroit News today that Chrysler “absolutely” expects to provide a hybrid, diesel or alternative fuel version of each of its cars and trucks.
“Every car will be impacted by advances in power-train,” Press said in an interview with The News. “Plug-in hybrid, diesel hybrid, fuel-cell hybrid, a petrol hybrid…they’re all in the mix.”
Press declined to identify a time frame, but emphasized that Chrysler is accelerating its “greener” vehicle development after lagging behind rivals such as Toyota and Honda Motor Co.
Last month, Chrysler announced the creation of a new division dubbed “Envi” to focus specifically on energy-efficient vehicles. (Earlier post.)
The company’s first gasoline-electric hybrid models are due out in 2008.

What provoked this late wake-up call?

I think it was when they were bought out by a private company. Apparently one with vision. It's funny that Mercedes is now offering a bunch of hybrids, and so is Chrysler, yet they just split. Maybe this has been in the works, but hush, hush.

At this date in late 2007, the 2010 models are cast in stone and the 2011 models are almost in the same situation. Every automaker has access to the same technology from their suppliers, including the multiple battery makers.
Cummins and MB have both announced a line of T2B5 clean Diesels sized for large cars and small trucks. What automakers used Cummins Diesels?
The Pentastar folks have the rights to the GM dual mode hybrids, as well. The dual mode drive with a front drive version of the dual mode and a new V6 or small clean diesel would make a fine package in their minivans and mid size front drive sedans. The modern "World" I4 or I3 could be very suitable for small sedan hybrids.
What is so surprising? Their small V8 is alt fuel already; and I believe the new phoenix v6 will emerge with alt fuel capacity and everything needed for the Atkinson cycle for a hybrid and HCCI.
There are no secrets, and patents can't give any maker a big advantage. These electrified drive trains and clean diesel vehicles are coming. Chrysler already has a T2B5 Cummins diesel for its big pickups three years before its needed; and a year before California requires it.
