| Fisker Automotive plug-in hybrid electric four-door sports sedan. |
Fisker Coachbuild, LLC and Quantum Technologies provided initial details on the $80,000, four-door plug-in hybrid premium sports sedan that will debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January. (Earlier post.)
The car is the first production vehicle to come from Fisker Automotive, Inc. Initial deliveries will commence in the 4th quarter of 2009 with annual production projected to reach 15,000 cars.
Certification, testing and drivetrain development will be conducted by joint venture partner Quantum Technologies. The car is being designed to offer a full 50 miles (80 km) all-electric range. A gasoline or diesel engine will extend the range of the Fisker plug-in to more than 620 miles (1,000 km). The battery pack will sit at the center of the vehicle between the two axles.
This positioning provides optimal vehicle driving dynamics, maximum safety, proportionate design as well as industry standard performance figures within this car class.
—Henrik Fisker, CEO of Fisker Automotive, Inc.
Quantum has invested in and is partnering with Advanced Lithium Power Ltd. (ALP) in the development and application of lithium-ion battery packs and management systems for plug-in hybrids.
Additionally, Fisker Automotive announced that it had appointed former BMW engineer Thomas Fritz as Director of Engineering.

Maybe your are right, these car is a marvel o marketing at flatering big bank balance customers who think that they will aquire the perfect big-boob-babe magnet and finally doing something good for the planet. Maybe we should educate babes not to jump in the first long hood roadster before making sure it's PEHV powered.
Anyway I still prefer the intelligent design of the bionic boxfish concept by Mercedes to this anti-darwinian dinosaur of design.

All good fun but the interesting point is that no one can buy a production freeway legal plug-in anything for any price today. Or am I wrong? Are there any freeway legal production electric vehicles actually available today? Are there any freeway legal production plug-in hybrids sold today? No retrofits please. No conversions please. I don't think so. If Tesla is ever delivered at 100 K it will be the first. A sad state of affairs. Hopefully someone will correct me.

This looks like it could be built on an Aston Martin chassis. Except that it has four doors.

Ugly beyond redemption. You would think by eliminating a huge engine and transmission and radiators and exhaust, etc. they could come up with a new attractive form that says "fast and green and high-tech" at the same time.
But no, they just love the mediocrity of it. Its going nowhere.

@JD
It can't happen all at once, PHEV and EV will be an evolution. Aptera for some, Zap for some, Tesla and Fisker for others. I agree it could use some green cues, what would your ideal EV/PHEV look like?

Interesting production schedule. Just about the same time as the Chevy VOLT - 4thQ '09. This car, if it arrives will appeal to the Big Babe enthusiasts - the VOLT with similar range and flex fuel extender under $30k, will be for all us regular folk.

This is the car that will bury the inconvenient and impotent Tesla in its current form. Tesla's only hope is to reduce their price and prodcue a practical series hybrid like this or the VOLT or the BYD. Battery-only electrics make no sense at this point and it's hard to visualize a time when they ever will. They also offer nothing in terms of emissions or avoiding gasoline. If everyone drove a series hybrid, we could make do with ethanol alone and not need any gasoline.

Maybe I can help shed some light on some of the questions poster are asking and that are being answered byother posters who don't know the facts but purport to. Fisker Automotive is a joint venture between Fisker Coachbuild and Quantum Fuelsystems. Quantum (QTWW) merged with Tecstar Automotive a couple years ago. Most of you have probably never heard of Tecstar, they have about 25 years experience in developing high end prototype vehicles for GM, their list of accomplishemnts include the Buick Grand National, 2Oth Anniversary Firebird, GMC Cyclone, GMC Typhoon, and the C5 Corvette. They also developed the Turbo version of the Porsche 944. So needless to say they have developed some of the most technologically advanced vehicles of their time. They then moved into actual production of vehicles and built every Z71 verison of Chevy trucks and SUVs for several years. So they have experience in both creating high end prototypes and production of vehicles on a mass scale (millions). They also develop and build vehicles for Foose (Chip Foose) including the Foose Mustang and new Foose F-150. Never before has there been a hybrid that looks great, gets 100MPG and actually has some performance so it will be fun to drive.

Twitter headlines

I'd never heard of Fisker before this, but I'd be more worried about the hybrid system than the range extender. Fisker apparently takes existing cars, changes interior, exterior and modifies the motor/suspension, and does this to order. He's also well connected and held in high esteem.
This project is a complete departure unless it's based on another mystery hybrid. Quantum appears to be ideal, but BMW can't work on Quantum's systems. Wikipedia says Fisker has sold very few cars. Not the best source, but still, how's he going to move 15,000? Regardless, I like it a lot, and if it's as good as it sounds then this is my new favorite car. We'll know in 3 days if it's too good to be true.
