Nissan to Join Low-Priced Car Project in India

25 October 2007

Asahi Shimbun. Nissan Motor Co. will help to develop a very low-priced car for sale in India as early as 2010, Nissan President Carlos Ghosn said Wednesday at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The car, to be developed by Nissan, France's Renault SA and Indian motorcycle manufacturer Bajaj Auto Ltd., is expected to sell for $2,500 (about 290,000 yen).

It would undercut a $3,000 car that Tata Motors Ltd., a major Indian automaker, plans to introduce in 2008.

Ghosn said the three companies will consider exporting the low-priced vehicle to China, Brazil, Indonesia and other markets.
