Toyota Expands Tundra Pickup Lineup with 13 New Models

Toyota Motor Sales, USA (TMS) expanded its Tundra full-size pickup truck lineup for 2008, adding 13 new model variations to bring the total variations to 44 in three cab styles. Since its introduction in February 2007, Tundra’s share of the half-ton full-size pickup truck segment has more than doubled, increasing from 8 to 17%.

Sales of the Tundra in September 2007 reached 19,571, up 61.4% from September 2006. Aggregate sales of the pickup in the first three quarters of 2007 climbed to 144,480 units, up 57.9% from 2006. Toyota has set a goal of 200,000 units for 2007.

The Double Cab is the top-selling volume Tundra configuration, accounting for 68% of non-fleet sales. The larger CrewMax accounts for 26% of Tundra sales. Tundra’s available 381 hp i-Force 5.7L V8 is chosen by 72% of customers.

The standard 2WD 2007 Tundra with the 5.7L V-8 delivers an estimated 16 mpg US combined cycle (14 city, 18 highway) under the new 2008 EPA methodology.

Little confused on the "8% to 17% of the market" comment. The Pick-up market in the U.S. is approximately a 2 million unit market. Previous Tundra sold around 120,000/year--therefore 6% of the total market. Now they expect to sell 200,000 Tundras this year which would be 10% of the total market. There is definitely a substantial increase in sales, but not double as this article is stating.

The key word is half-ton

Yes, you're right--Thanks. That would hold out if just talking about the half-ton pick-up market alone. Note to self...read before posting.

What does this have to do with anything "green?" 16 mpg hardly sounds like "sustainable mobility."

Tundras are available in "Timberland Mica" which is a variation of green, therefore officially making them "Green" trucks. :)

It's too bad they don't make a small pick up truck anymore.

I have to agree with domenick, though - it's a shame their smallest pickup is now the size of an old full-size.

Both the Silverado and the Sierra get better gas mileage, making them more green!

14/18 what horrible fuel mileage. Why not just get the GMC or Chevy and better gas mileage?

and how is any news about a pickup truck that is not class leading in any way, especially fuel mileage, of any importance to being 'green'?

I always thought ever since I first heard the news of this new Tundra, what a act of leadership in the world of green vehicles it would have been if Toyota would've introduced this Tundra as a Hybrid. Instead, they were essentially sheep and brought out another thirsty V8.

Speaking of Hybrid trucks, it's nice to hear GM is working on bringing out a 2-mode Hybrid Silverado in approx. a year. I hope these 2-modes work in these applications, as it's hard to say what will happen to durability when people punish these vehicles with towing applications. Sure hope they are doing their homework at GM!

Wow! more Dinosaurs on the roads. This is not very good news and not the best way to reduce GHG.

I don't think the main problem with full-sized pickups is that they exist. There are some legitimate uses for these vehicles. The problem is the number of people that buy them for the image and have no real reason to own one. I used to work for an electrician in Northern Ontario and everyone drove these things, because anything else was considered girly" even if they never had anything more than tool kit in the back that would have fit into the trunk of a Fit.

I'm glad I don't own Ford stock any more. F-150 is Ford's bread and butter, and Toyota has that market in their cross hairs. Better quality and better reliability are going to out compete the domestic offerings. The pickup market doesn't care so much about greenness. If I had a large boat or heavy trailer to tow I would definitely be looking at one of these.

Other than the new trim level/packaging, has Toyota done any other minor tweaks or improvements? I've heard complaints about the interior quality and their crash-test rating, so did they do anything to respond to these issues?

Hmm... "Green" site writes about new trim levels and bodystyles for a gas-guzzling Toyota truck... Smells like payola to me...

Come on people. Toyota can do no wrong.
Just look at all their hybrid ideas for trucks.....

Oh ya, there are none. That evil GM with their evil partners BMW, Daimler and now Chrysler must be playing tricks on everyone....

I read the link you listed. I can't speak for the editor here at GCC but in hindsight, this probably wasn't relative to the kind of topics we discuss here on a daily basis. With that said, I guess I look at it like, "Big deal" and "So what?". As for the anti-greenie postings at that site, well, I guess I look at it like this...the things we discuss here, and are fighting to promote, will be the things that some day save those people as well as ourselves.

@ Schmeltz: It's a "big deal" because by being a "Green" site, you're in some way making a correlation between "better for the environment" and the Toyota Tundra pickup. All that does if further emphasize the "halo effect" I spoke of in my post. And that's a problem -- because it basically condones Toyota's behavior. If you've really got a thing for "green" cars -- then don't post about the Toyota Tundra unless Toyota's actually making them more fuel efficient -- and not just posting them because they're made by Toyota.

I'm not for unnessaceraly polluting but there are times where you need real power. the Toyota Tundra has real power. good luck pulling a trailer with a hybrid, you'll either burn it up or won't move at all. I think Toyota has done a good thing building a truck that can be used as a truck. small trucks don't get good gas mileage anyway. If gas mileage is a concern get a car. If you need a truck get one

You guys should look at the gas electric hybrid heavy work trucks that toyota builds called Hinos. These trucks technology will be used in the future Tundra hybrid.
Also, big heavy trucks probably never be as efficient as a small car. That is just the way it is.

I have owned pickup trucks since 1986. I have had Fords and now a Chevrolet S-10 four wheel Drive. My Wife and I have bee building a cabin in Northern Mn so we need a Pickup truck to haul things and tow our 17 ft boat. Also, our cabin is located in a remote area six miles in on a dirt road that gets muddy in spring and deep snow and ice in winter. My truck has 193,000 miles on it however, I am not willing to make a new truck payment and feed a truck with $3.00 a gallon gas. A person driving a new Toyota full size truck could concievably be spwnding $1,000.00 or more in payments, insurance, and gas. Automakers need to make these trucks more efficient. I think this is all market driven and Americans should not purchase any of the new trucks until they are made to get at least 30 mpg average. If we do not buy them the automakers will change tham quickly. As long as Americans are willing to buy trucks that get terrible gas mileage the automakers will not change them.

Dave T is a dumbass. the only thing the silvershito/seirra is class leading in is mpg buy a monster 2 mpg. 14/18 is not bad for a 5.7 V8 fullsize pickup
