Toyota Plans to Boost Global Corolla Output To 1.5M Units in 2008
13 October 2007
Nikkei. Toyota Motor Corp. plans to manufacture 1.5 million units of its Corolla sedans and wagons worldwide next year—about 200,000 units more than expected this year and more than double the production of rival models.
Corolla output will increase in such countries as South Africa and China. By mass-producing and marketing a single product line around the globe, Japan’s top automaker seeks to enhance its cost competitiveness.
Among the supporting actions are:
The Tsutsumi plant in Japan, which now produces the Prius and other models, will start producing 50,000 Corolla sedans a year for export.
Toyota increased its South African capacity for Corolla production from 130,000 to 220,000 units.
Toyota opened a third Tianjin, China factory with an annual capacity of 200,000 units. Full operations will start next year.
Toyota will introduce a new Corolla model in 2008 in the US, and lift production in California and other states.
Last week, Toyota introduced the Corolla Rumion in Japan, a new compact hatchback in the Corolla family. The Corolla Rumion features simple, box-like styling, and offers a choice of 1.5-liter and 1.8-liter engines.

Very interesting. The Corolla is already the best selling vehicle in the world, and it looks like Toyota wants to put even more of a distance between it and the competition.
