UQM Receives Additional $1.13M in Military Orders for HEV Programs and Export Power
9 October 2007
During the last six months, UQM Technologies has received orders from military customers totaling $1.13 million for propulsion systems, generators and funded engineering activities on hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) programs and export power applications.
These orders are in addition to previously announced orders during the same six months from the US Air Force, the US Navy, the Tank - Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) and Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide, Inc., which collectively totaled $1.24 million.
Military export power programs are primarily focused on the generation of significantly higher amounts of electric power onboard both conventional diesel powered vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles currently under development. The military requires additional electric power on the battlefield for command and control centers, medical equipment, construction equipment, battery charging, and air conditioning, among other electrical loads.
This electric power need is currently being met with towed generator systems rated from 5 to 200 kW, weighing from 900 to 10,000 lbs. With the emergence of advanced motors, generators and power electronics that are being applied within both hybrid and conventional engine-driven vehicles, the military is moving toward the adoption of systems that can supplement or replace the power produced currently by these towed generator sets, providing more mobile power generation systems.
