BorgWarner Introducing Next-Generation Dual-Clutch Transmission Technology
12 November 2007
BorgWarner is introducing new, higher efficiency shifting dual-clutch transmission technology that is projected to offer fuel efficiency 40% greater than the improvement delivered by dual-clutch transmissions in production today.
Advanced friction materials, heat exchange improvements and optimized control systems enable a dual-clutch design that uses less lubrication and a smaller pump. This &ldqo;humid” or moist-clutch operating environment fosters greater fuel efficiency than the current wet-clutch configuration.
Today’s dual-clutch transmissions on average deliver a 5% or more improvement in fuel economy over current six-speed transmissions. Now, BorgWarner’s next generation dual-clutch technology provides enhanced materials and controls that boost the efficiency by an additional 2%.

Oh goody, two clutches to wear out. I have been spoiled by Toyota's HSD and will never buy another car without one.

As an amateur road racer, I marvel at the design of the duel clutch trannies; nothing beats being able to go up and down the gear chain in tenths of seconds. But, they are complex and expensive. Recently there has been a new idea in fast shifting transmissions: http://www.zeroshift.com/transmissions.html perhaps when these reach production, I can afford one.
