12 December 2007
Nikkei. Suzuki Motor Corp. will produce a new small car in India from next year, underscoring a drive by the Japanese minicar maker to make the South Asian nation a global production hub.
Suzuki will initially produce 150,000 units of the hatchback model each year at the factory of its local unit, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., Chairman Osamu Suzuki said at a press conference. As many as 100,000 cars will be exported mostly to Europe, with the remainder sold in India, he said.
&ldqou; We would like to export more vehicles from India to Europe,” Suzuki said earlier at an industry meeting. “We would like India to earn more foreign exchange.”
A concept model of the 1.0-liter A-Star car will be unveiled at the Auto Expo 2008 in New Delhi in January. Cars with engine displacements of 0.8 to 1.6 liters constitute about two-thirds of the more than one million cars sold in India each year.
