Cellulosic Ethanol from Wood Waste to Premiere at Twelve Hours of Sebring
29 January 2008
KL Process Design Group (KL) of Rapid City, SD, will supply the American Le Mans Series with cellulosic E85 racing ethanol for the 2008 season. The fuel, produced from waste wood, will be used for the first time during the season opener— Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring on March 15, 2008. Corvette Racing will be the first team to use the cellulosic-based flex-fuel ethanol in competition.
There will be at least two automotive manufacturers that will run E85 during the 2008 season: Corvette Racing and Aston Martin Racing.
The plant providing the fuel—Western Biomass Energy, LLC—is located one mile south of Upton, Wyo. It began operations in March 2007, and was the first demonstration-commercial hybrid plant to operate in the US. The plant is the result of six years of development efforts between KL, the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, the Wyoming Business Council and the Wyoming Department of Forestry.
Western Biomass Energy does not plan to consume highly marketable wood products such as saw logs or clean sawdust. Its focus is to process products other than logs with a focus on forest thinning and slash pile material.

E85 is not a flex-fuel, but a fuel for flex-fuel vehicles. Sorry, but don't like the whole CAFE loop hole so get overly picky on the topic.

“It is now possible to economically convert discarded wood into a clean burning, sustainable alternate motor fuel” said Randy Kramer, president of KL Process Design Group.

That one company mentioned on here that is building in Georgia intends to use forest waste for ethanol in their process.
Out of the 1 billion tons per year of biomass, I would guess 100 million tons of forest waste, but that is just a guess.

Anyone have figures on how much forestry waste is produced in the U.S. annually? I'm not a fan of ethanol, but if it comes from waste and there is a positive energy balance, why not?
