ARB Awards $500K to Support Commercialization of Three Clean Air Technologies
12 February 2008
The California Air Resources Board recently approved nearly $500,000 in grants to bolster the commercialization of three leading-edge clean air technologies. The projects, funded under the ARB’s Innovative Clean Air Technologies program, include demonstrations of an advanced particulate filter, a mobile greenhouse gas measurement platform, and a solar water heating system.
At least 50% of a project’s total cost must come from matching funds; 10% must be committed by the grantee.
Three projects out of 62 applications were selected for their potential to support ARB programs and initiatives, and facilitate emission reductions in California:
GEO2 (Woburn, Mass.) will receive $185,000 to apply advanced particulate filter systems on large off-road diesel engines and small hand-held engines, such as those used in lawn and garden applications, with the potential to cut the cost of filter use. Total project cost is estimated to be $370,000.
GEO2’s Cross-Linked Microstructure (CLM) removes 99% of pollutants from diesel exhaust while achieving high fuel economy, emissions control and enhanced engine performance. (Earlier post.)
GEO2 recently introduced a new ceramic fiber silicon carbide (SiC) substrate for diesel particulate filtering.
Los Gatos Research (Mountain View, Calif.) will receive $77,996 to demonstrate in a mobile laboratory their state-of-the-art laser-based instruments for real-time measurements of greenhouse gases and other pollutants; and
Davis Energy Group (Davis, Calif.) will receive $235,000 to demonstrate its SunCache residential solar water heating system that is expected to cost less than half as much as current systems while reducing smog-forming and climate change emissions.
Criteria for project selection include: the potential air quality benefit, readiness for commercialization in California, project quality and synchronicity with ARB’s existing programs.

Since diesels put out 100 times more fine particulates than gas engines, then the filters get diesels to gas engine levels of pollution...according to the company...when the filters are new...maybe.
Of course, the diesel filters mandated in Europe have iffy results on fine particles & no effect on nano particles.
Fine particles have recently been shown to cause heart disease. Even newer reports say nano particles from both diesel & gas engines are linked to heart disease even more directly. So the importance of truly efficient & effective filters cannot be overstated.
I assume these filters DO NOT filter nano particles.
If someone has more data, fill us in.
