Galp Energia in Partnership with INETI and Algafuel to Develop Algae-Based Carbon Capture and Biofuel Project
16 March 2008
Galp Energia, Portugal’s leading integrated oil and natural gas company, has entered into a partnership with the Portuguese National Institute of Engineering, Technology and Innovation (INETI) and Algafuel to develop an algae-based carbon capture and biofuel project.
The objective of this project is the development and implementation of a prototype unit for algae production at the Sines, Portugal refinery using carbon dioxide from exhaust gases, and the subsequent processing of the algal biomass to vegetable oil.
Each tonne of microalgae produced consumes at least two tonnes of CO2, and can accumulate lipids that may reach 60-70% of its dry weight.
Algafuel is a biotechnology spin-off from Necton SA that is dedicated to developing and delivering bioengineering projects for the industrial production of microalgae.
