Metafoam’s Nickel Foam Electrodes Show Promising Results for Hydrogen Production

14 March 2008

Preliminary testing of Metafoam Technologies’ nickel foams used as porous electrodes in hydrogen production via water electrolysis have yielded promising results, according to the company.

Preliminary tests were done at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) by Professor Benoît Marsan’s team. According to him, “such a material could lead to significant energy savings and thus encourage hydrogen usage as a green source of energy”.

Metafoam’s material has reached roughness factors 2 to 25 times higher than standard porous meshes and competing metal foams.

Metafoam’s materials could lead to a significant performance increase in other electrochemical fields, namely chemicals production, fuel cells, and batteries.

Metafoam and UQAM will pursue their investigation in the following months.
