Volkswagen to Introduce CNG Version of Caddy in UK

Volkswagen will launch its natural gas-fueled version of its Caddy light commercial van—the Caddy Ecofuel—in the UK by the end of 2008.

The Caddy Ecofuel went on sale in Germany in 2006, and uses a 2.0-liter “quasi-monovalent” (gasoline engine optimized for operation with natural gas) engine that delivers 80 kW / 109 hp of power and 160 Nm (118 lb-ft) of torque. Four under-floor tanks hold 26 kg of natural gas or biomethane; a gasoline reserve tank hold 13 liters of fuel. The combined capacity of the two fuels supports a range of around 350 miles.

The Caddy Ecofuel produces 157 g CO2/km—20% fewer CO2 emissions than a gasoline-fueled version, and has very low emissions of NOx and PM.

Why would you buy one? The days of surplus Natual Gas in the UK are over, forcasts say the majority of gas in that country will have to be imported in a few years, they have used up their reserves in 1 generation. Sorry kids you're on your own...

What's the availability of CNG in Europe. Is it all Fleet operation or are there stations for the general public?

I was in Turkey last month, almost all the service stations carried LPG.

The best option is renewable methane...Uk produces highest volume in EU, all goes to make elec at 30% efficiency, cannot make sense......clean it and use for vehicles.......displaces the do lally high CO2 GTL fuel....UK importing oil in 2008 for first time for a long time...biomethane in the Caddy much better

Germany has 700 CNG stations, UK looking at depot based stations for fleets looking to reduce CO2, reduce NOX, reduce particulates...

I would use biomass synthesis gas in combined cycle power plants and use the high octane NG in cars. It seems a waste not to use NG in a small turbo and get the most out of the octane.
