Report: Smith Electric Vehicles and Ford Partnering on Electric Commercial Vehicles

11 April 2008

According to a report in the UK Sun, Smith Electric Vehicles and Ford are developing a new range of electric commercial vehicles based on the Ford Transit Connect.

The electric van reportedly costs twice as much as its diesel counterpart but Ford and Smith Electric believe that the electric option will prove more cost effective over a five year period.

The vehicle reportedly offers a range of 100 miles and a maximum speed of 70 mph.

Nice, of all the obvious potential partnerships for Ford I thought this was one of the most interesting options, because surely there is a decent market even at current fuel prices.

Excellent news! The Ford Transit Connect (not to be confused with its bigger brother the Ford Transit) is already available with windows all round, and presented in Taxi form at the New York auto show recently. It strikes me that if it is available with those extra seats and windows, it almost equates to a car - putting Ford ahead of all the other major brand carmakers - for those (like me) who already drive a van-like car.
