Toyota May Build Camry Hybrid in Australia by 2012

7 April 2008

The Australian. Toyota may build the Camry Hybrid in Australia, coinciding with the introduction of its next-generation model in 2012.

With other car-makers expected to introduce hybrid models over the next few years, Toyota Australia executive vice-president Dave Buttner said he believed there was potential for demand to snowball and that Toyota wanted to lead the charge.

“With the signs we’re seeing, then I can see significant demand in the future—not just from business fleets, but from government and private buyers,” he said.

The only two hybrids currently on sale are the Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic. More than 3,100 Priuses were sold in Australia last year, up 63% from the previous year. Honda sold just over 1,000 units of the Civic Hybrid last year.
