ANA Introduces Ecology Plan 2008-2011 with CO2 Reduction Goals
25 May 2008
All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. (ANA) introduced its Ecology Plan 2008-2011, in which it sets goals for the reduction of CO2 emissions by its fleet.
Specifically, ANA will reduce the amount of CO2 produced on domestic routes by 200,000 tonnes, compared with 2006 levels, down from 4.9 million to 4.7 million tonnes. Including international flights, CO2 emissions per tonne per kilometer will be reduced by 10% by the end of 2011, compared with 2006 levels, which equates to a fall of 25% compared to 1990 levels—the yardstick given in the Kyoto Protocol.
We have just moved into the four year period from 2008 to 2011 outlined in the Kyoto Protocol for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The environment is one of the most pressing issues facing the airline industry today and at ANA we are committed to taking a leading role. To this end we are forging ahead with the renewal of our fleet with the most environmentally friendly aircraft available, we are engaged in reforestation and coral-growing projects, we run a picture book competition to raise awareness of the environment, and have now become the first airline in the world to set its own emissions targets.
