DOE To Provide $7.5M for Advanced Water Power Systems

6 May 2008

The US Department of Energy (DOE) will provide up to $7.5 million in federal funding for research and development to help advance the viability and cost-competitiveness of advanced water power systems, including ocean wave, tidal, current and other water-based resources.

The solicitation (Funding Opportunity Announcement, FOA) provides industry-led partnerships with the opportunity to conduct research on engineering standards and codes, utility grid interconnection issues associated with water technologies, technical sitting requirements, and wave and tidal resources assessments.

DOE also plans to award grants to university-led groups to conduct advanced research on marine renewable energy. These groups will serve as an information clearinghouse for the marine renewable energy industry, collecting and disseminating information on best practices research. Research will include technology testing, experimental and numerical modeling, wave forecasting, environmental impacts, and corrosion-resistant materials research.

Successful applicants will be required to develop collaborative project teams involving at least one other industry, university or national laboratory partner and a minimum 50% non-federal cost share is required.

Completed applications for this FOA are due 16 June 2008. All grant applications will be merit reviewed and competitively awarded. DOE anticipates selecting up to 17 awards, and projects are expected to begin in Fiscal Year 2008. The continuation of projects beyond FY 2008 is subject to Congressional appropriations.

Is there a typing mistake? Shouldn't it be $7.5B instead of $7.5M?

I looked at the DOE announcement. I looked at grants.gov. I looked at the Golden Field Office synopsis.

All three show differing amounts of money available, from 17mil to 23mil, but definitely not billion.

This will fund a few papers and keep things in the conceptual stage for a while longer. It will give the appearance to doing something. What conservatives like to do is put a bit around until they find a gold mine for their friends. It is a way of leveraging public funds for private profit. Not unlike no bid contracts.

HMMmmm -- the Mississippi alone probably has enough power generating capacity (using those newer funky water/current generators -- no dams necessary) to power this whole country with plently left over to sell to Canada and Mexico.
