GM Delivers First Hybrids to Dubai Government
28 June 2008
General Motors earlier this month delivered its first hybrid vehicles in the Middle East to the Government of Dubai and the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The vehicles, which include the Chevrolet Tahoe hybrid and the Chevrolet Malibu hybrid, are part of a project that involves a 12-month trial using the vehicles as public taxis that could eventually lead to one of the largest hybrid fleets in the world.
The trial is the first of its kind in the region. The agreement between the Government of Dubai and GM is a first step in the RTA’s plan to make all taxis in Dubai environmentally-friendly, and is in line with their vision to reduce vehicle pollution.
GM was the first automotive company to approach the Dubai government on this project. The rapid introduction of the Chevrolet hybrids was the result of close cooperation established between GM and the RTA, and included training over 100 personnel, including first responders, in on the operation, safety protocols and maintenance of hybrid vehicles.

Anon.
You really think Dubai is desperate for help from GM. More likely GM needs to increase sales, particularly on the hybrids.
The Toronto Star says "At $26,995, the Hybrid is $4,000 more than the base Malibu and more than $5,000 less than the Camry Hybrid, while still coming with a great load of standard features.
I hope it is not supply limited. If it doesn't sell then - who's at fault.

Please do not compare GM's minor/partial hybrids with Toyota's Prius or Camry full hybrids.
They are not is the same league.

These mild hybrids should be compared to the parallel and series hybrids; And with the full EVs. Otherwise we will continue to believe that the Prius actually saves money rather than just make us feel good - even with subsidies. Are we allowed to compare it to the Insight? The most economical package should be offered, however impure it might be. Maybe it will sell better, maybe it will be available. Maybe the "insane rush" to buy hybrids will increase above 3% of new buyers.

Dubai's economy was built on the back of the oil industry.
However, the oil is now running out, and will be mostly gone in 20 years.
GM has been one of the primary facilitators of the world oil economy.
I for one am not at all surprised to see GM being 'nice' in supplying a few hybrid SUVs to keep a loyal oil provider happy for a bit longer.
