Beijing Sets Record for Electricity Demand

4 July 2008

Xinhua. Beijing, China set a record for electricity demand at 12.03 million kW as residents switched on air conditioners in response to sweltering heat.

Beijing experienced a high of 39°C (102°F) on Thursday and 35°C (95°F) on Friday. Maximum electricity demand this summer is predicted to reach 14.6 million kW, with air-conditioning use the main cause of the rising consumption.

The previous record in Beijing was 11.9 million kw on 21 August 2007.

The State Council, or the cabinet, issued a circular last June, banning temperatures lower than 26 degrees Celsius [78.7°F] in all air-conditioned public buildings in the country.

Well, if China would hurry up and get a few more coal power plants built, they wouldnt have this issue.

Its funny, no matter what we (America) do to switch away from a so called "dirty" fuel, someone else (usually China/India) uses triple the amount we would have--and with NO pollution controls. I love it!

Air conditioning certainy is a big problem for electricity providers, with very inneficient cheaply made units being installed at an increasing rate. The energy suppliers are correctly advising against these products here in Australia as the no1 consumer driven load mismatch that in hot climes that threatens the grid.
Leading to brownouts and rolling powercuts.(As in parts of the the US.

One would have to consider the possibility tat he upcoming Olympic games must be responsible for a large increase in demand for all forms of energy. Construction and labour at that pace require huge resources (and expenditure)
