Bosch Has Delivered 500,000 Starters for Start/Stop Systems

13 July 2008

Since the start of production in 2007, Bosch has supplied half a million starter-based start/stop systems to BMW and MINI. (Earlier post.) Three additional vehicle manufacturers have decided to use this technology, according to Bosch, and are planning roll-outs within the next few months.

Boschstarter
A specially adapted starter is the central component of the Bosch Smart Electronic Start-Stop System.

Start/stop systems switch off the internal combustion engine if the vehicle is stationary—for example in traffic jams or at red traffic lights. Depending on the vehicle concerned, start/stop systems save up to 5% in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) and produce correspondingly less CO2. In the urban part of the NEDC, the reduction in consumption and emissions is as much as 8%.

Bosch developers designed a specially adapted starter for the system, the Smart Starter Motor. The system as a whole includes control software which can be integrated in the respective engine control unit, a crankshaft sensor with evaluation electronics, and a battery sensor that is needed to detect the battery’s current state of charge and to communicate this information via the energy management system.

Bosch has considerably increased the specified number of starts of the start/stop starter and as a consequence increased its service life compared with a conventional starter.

The more powerful electric starter motor as well as low-noise, enhanced meshing mechanics guarantee safe, fast, and quiet engine starts. Despite its extended functional scope, the starter is compact and remains very easy to integrate in the vehicle. Unlike other technologies, this approach is also suitable for cold starts in diesel engines.

This is good technology - especially to save on the fuel bill. I don't like the idea of having to restart the engine in traffic on a regular basis though.

The point of this system is that it is automatic, you don't have to restart the car ever.

A Prius does this already.

Yes, a Prius does this already, but with an extra motor and large battery pack. This gives you one of the main benefits of a hybrid with considerably less complication and expense.

An average of about 6.5% fuel consumption reduction would turn a 15 mph gas guzzler into a 16 mph gas guzzler.

Even if all existing ICE vehicles were retrofitted, it would not make a significant difference in world fossil fuel availability and price.

Seems to be too little too late.

Actually this makes a world of difference in stop and go traffic. Mile per gallon is meaningless in that situation. In stop an go it is all about the gallons per hour. I can see a savings of 30 to 40 percent in a stop and go commute.

This and the belt alternator as per the smart for2 are poor cousins even to the BMW overunning alternator starter.
I dont like the idea behind either.Belt or cog drive is a nasty shortcut. Simply not worth further comment.A rather lame effort.
Mazda's smart start is more elegant.
BMW had a thin profile flywheel ststem 10 years ago. With capacity to convert serious braking effort to storage.
I guess the world's not ending by close of buisness so a token effort is all we can expect. Money to be made and all that.

The key may be getting the best economy at the lowest cost. Honda will come out with hybrids at under $2000 premium over regular models. Their IMA design is simple and cost effective.
