FedEx Puts 10 Iveco Diesel-Electric Hybrid Daily Vans in Field for Trials

13 July 2008

Iveco has delivered 10 diesel-electric hybrid Daily vans to Federal Express as part of an extended field evaluation. The trials will be conducted in Italy, on routes between Milan and Turin, using the latest generation of the hybrid technology developed by Iveco and exhibited for the first time at the RAI Show in Amsterdam in October. (Earlier post.)

The Daily Hybrid combines a diesel engine with a Bosch motor and electronics and a ZF transmission in an inline parallel configuration. The battery pack is from Johnson Controls. Iveco will provide a larger capacity battery-pack for all-electric, plug-in zero-emission vehicle operation at customer request. The company is targeted approximately a 30% reduction in fuel consumption (based on operating cycle) with the standard Daily Hybrid.

This trial is the first stage of a new agreement between Iveco and FedEx Express, which have been actively working together in the development of this technology. FedEx Express will also be the first company to test this new technology in other European cities, with further vehicles to be trialed in Paris shortly.

It would be better if these were biodiesel-electric hybrids....

@ ejj: did you mean to say: "It would be better if these were certified by the manufacturer to be biodiesel-friendly"? I think that's what you meant--the problem with widespread biodiesel use is that engine manufacturers won't honor warranty repairs if biodiesel has been used. That's slowly changing, I believe, but it's still a major concern for any kind of corporate diesel fleet.

If Iveco certifies these new engines for use with biodiesel that meets ASTM standards, I think that would definitely help improve their attraction, especially with the green crowd.

Seems time to push the manufacturers to accept a biodiesel standard and warrant their engines for it. this would take very little effort on the part of industry and politics and give municipalities like PA help implementing renewable programs.

Nice to see a hybrid diesel being tested. I can only imagine what a TDI would get with a hybrid set up. 65+mpg? I drove the speed limit for two weeks with my TDI and I got 54.5 mpg. Not bad. Some of that was traffic but not all.

Cars with hybrid electric engines, which are expected to account for 6. 5 percent of U. S. auto sales by 2012 according to a report by J. D. Power and Associates Automotive Forecasting Services, might not be available to used dealerships for some time. It typically takes two to five years for new cars to cycle through to resale points. But by that time, it might be too late for many area dealers.
