Raser Developing EREV Pickup Truck for Fleets

22 July 2008

Raser Technologies is developing an extended range electric vehicle (EREV) light duty pickup truck using the same plug-in electric drive system as its EREV SUV, also under development. (Earlier post.)

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) of California will test and demonstrate one of the first E-REV pick-up trucks from Raser Technologies. In February, PG&E signed an agreement with Raser Technologies to purchase two plug-in hybrid SUVs using Raser’s electric drive system for early testing and demonstration.

The extended range electric truck (E-REV) using Raser’s drive system is propelled entirely by a 200 kW peak, 100 kW continuous AC induction motor. A 100 kW PM synchronous generating system with a 700V lithium-ion battery pack and power management system provide the electricity. The truck is being developed in cooperation with the Plug-In Hybrid Consortium Development and is designed to operate with zero direct emissions during typical local daily driving.

Raser’s plug-in hybrid trucks are expected to cut operational fuel costs up to 75% by driving in all-electric mode during typical daily fleet routes of up to 40 miles. When driving beyond the 40-mile battery electric range, the E-REV trucks may continue up to 400 miles by generating their own electricity.

Raser keeps issuing bombastic announcements but never any definite results of tests performed on their Symetron motor technology or any product completed.
Most deals with some unknown companies.
Currently they have apparently two significant project under development (or rather under announcement), EREV SUV and EREV pickup truck developing simultaneously with unproven Symetron drive, and both 4x4 which further complicates design.
On the other hand mighty GM is concentrating its resources on just one such vehicle (Volt, which is not even a 4x4).
I'm very skeptical of Raser's abilities to deliver and of their Symetron motors.

Didn't the Army used similar configuration for their development large Hummer type Jeep and light trucks? Would this be a civilian version of the same technology?

There may have been an non-binding deal to evaluate Symetron motor for some military vehicles, and nothing afterwards.
I think military selected some UQM PM motor for some project.
Raser was mostly concentrated on some geothermal projects.
