Report: Samsung Group to Develop $1.64B Biodiesel Project in Indonesia

The Jakarta Post. The Samsung Group, plans to invest up to Rp 15 trillion (US$1.64 billion) to develop a 25,000-hectare palm oil plantation and biodiesel refinery in Indonesia, according to Al Hilal Hamdi, head of Indonesia’s national team for biofuel development.
The Samsung plant is scheduled to begin operations next year, and will produce 50,000 kiloliters (13.2 million gallons US) of biodiesel per year.
As of March 2008, investment in the bioenergy sector in Indonesia had reached Rp 31.47 trillion (US$3.4 billion). Current annual biofuel production is currently 2 million kiloliters (528 million gallons US) and is expected to grow to 5 million kiloliters (1.3 billion gallons US) by 2010.

A very good question, 25 000 hectares (almost 62 000 acres) is a fair piece of agricultural land, but palm trees will not necessarily have a negative effect of GHG.
Both, Indonesia and Korea need more liquid fuel to replace imported fossil fuel.
