Tata Motors Developing EV; Rollout in Norway Likely This Year

Newstrack India. India’s Tata Motors is developing an electric car in collaboration with a Norway-based company. The EV is likely to roll out in Norway this year, according to Ratan Tata, the Chairman of Tata Group at the annual general meeting (AGM).

Describing about the e-car, [Ratan Tata] said, “We are looking at the creation of an electric car. This financial year we are doing it for Norway and we hope to launch it in other markets in the next financial year.”

In 2007, Tata signed an agreement with MDI (Moteur Developpment International) of France for the application in India of MDI’s compressed air engines. (Earlier post.) With respect to that project, Tata said:

“We have been working with a company in France. It will be completely free of pollution. It is a technology, which could have some promise. It may happen. It may not happen.”

I like the way Tata has positioned themselves and the way they approach IP. They simply find what they feel is the best, license it, and then build it as cheaply as possible.

Tata must be praised for trying to compete with TH!NK or better said to share the electric car market.

TATA should use cheap lead acid batteries for energy storage and a hydraulic transmission (or compressed air) for the power peaks of starting and braking. Electronic valves and controls allow for high efficiency hydraulic motors.

Full electric cars must not be allowed to be built, as there should always be an ethanol, gasoline or diesel powered auxilary generator available, so that the public will never have to worry or even think about the range of the car. Such generators can run at super high speeds for a lot of power in a small lightweight package.

The use and effectiveness of such generators for electric car was proved by the TZERO trailer unit, but for public acceptance the unit must be built into the car. The size and weight of the battery can be greatly reduced by the availability of such units, but the car will still get most of its energy from the power grid.... ..hg..

I say let's get the full electric cars on the roads in sufficient numbers to understand out the real issues with real customers.

What are only perceived limitations and what are the genuine issues?

Is Tata going to propose a PHEV with an MDI compressed air genset or a pure BEV with improved batteries for extended e-range? Regardless of the technology used, Tata could make much more affordable e-vehicles.

Interesting development for people who cannot afford to pay $100K for a practical e-car.

Interesting but the latest news on MDI is dificult to find in internet but the OneCAT will be send in FRANCE the next year 2009 !
