ElectraFlyer C Debuts at Oskhosh AirVenture

3 August 2008

EAA AirVenture Today. The Electric Aircraft Corp. flew its ElectraFlyer C—an all-electric airplane based on a Moni Motorglider—at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

The ElectraFlyer-C is powered by a custom-built 5.6 kWh lithium polymer battery pack with a projected cycle life of 1,000 cycles. An 18 hp (13 kW) motor direct drives a 45-inch ground adjustable, two-blade PowerFin carbon fiber propeller, which lifts the ElectraFlyer-C at a climb rate of 500 to 600 fpm. Takeoff rpm is 2800.

The aircraft cruises at 70 mph, stalls at 45 mph, and has a top speed of 90 mph and a flight duration of 1-1/2 to 2 hours. The pack weighs 78 pounds, and can be recharged in two hours using a 220V charger or six hours with a 110V charger.

The Electric Aircraft Corp. does not sell the airplane but does offer complete powerplant packages, including the motor and controller.

This has a range of about 200 km, comparable with the range and speeds being achieved by ground transportation Battery Electric Cars.

This should have lots of use in farm and ranch duty applications.

Also, due to large wing area, we look for solar to become efficient enough to become useful as an option.

It's a start; what is it's weight?
It's also interesting that airlines and manufacturers are starting to take a good hard look at turbo prop jets again because of the fuel use of jet is very high.

Quoth gr:

Silent airports.
I fear that propellers make noise all by themselves (esp. at 2800 RPM, so you won't quite get there.  You can even hear air whistling past and through the flight surfaces on gliders!  However, an electric Moni is bound to be a lot quieter than most piston powerplants.
