Indiana Offers EnerDel $7M+ in Incentives for Production Expansion

21 August 2008

The state of Indiana is offering lithium-ion battery maker EnerDel up to $7.125 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $58,000 in training grants based on the company’s job creation associated with expansion plans at the company’s Indianapolis manufacturing facilities.

The developer of lithium-ion batteries for hybrid, plug-in electric and electric vehicles will expand its Indianapolis research and cell production center, build and equip a battery pack assembly center in nearby Noblesville, and locate a full-scale manufacturing operation at a still to be selected location in the state. The company expects to create more than 850 new jobs across the state through 2012.

The cities of Indianapolis and Noblesville will consider property tax abatement at the request of the Indy Partnership. The company will also seek local incentive offers from Indiana communities for a third manufacturing location.

A subsidiary of Ener1, Inc., EnerDel currently operates a 92-person production facility on the northeast side of Indianapolis. Last week, Ener1 announced it had acquired 100% ownership of EnerDel from Delphi Automotive, which is undergoing extensive restructuring. Delphi had held a 19.5 percent stake in EnerDel. Good for them. Not so good for Delphi methinks...

Delphi probably was doing whatever they could to get cash.

Good for the US to have battery production capability on our shores, but will it utilize enough automation to make it cost competitive.

The issue is both automation and quality. Domestic batteries will likely be perceived as equal in quality to Japanese batteries. A preferable product to low cost, limited warranty batteries.

Not so fast - everyone thinks China/Japan will be the low cost MFG -- that may be true but don't forget the shipping penalty -- I hear/see they are MFG'ing furniture in SC/NC like there is no tomorrow because they are now competative again because of the shipping penalty. I would think the shipping penalty for batteries from China/Japan would be even greater!!

The return of the furniture industry is almost significant. One mayor said something like "this is good, but all the old mills are now gone or converted to restaurants and the workers are gone - the token return is nice but just token".

The return is just token. The industry is no more. A local mayor said the mills and factories are restaurants and botiques. The workers are gone. One or 2 specialized factories.

IMO, as the price of oil creeps higher over the next ten years, ($100/bbl, $150, $200, $250...) We will see domestic industry make a comeback.
